Concrete Control Joints

Concrete Control Joints: As the concrete dries, the water in the concrete evaporates. As the water evaporates, the concrete shrinks in volume. The concrete will develop shrinkage cracks as it dries. Shrinkage cracks are a normal part of concrete. We introduce control joints into the wet concrete. The control joints perforate the concrete to allow the shrinkage cracks to form in the control joints. Typically, each of these control joints will have a hairline crack in it.

Consider Pea Fill Exposed Finish for your New Concrete Driveway

When you are thinking of having a new concrete driveway installed, consider pea fill exposed aggregate. This type of finish shows the least amount of wear over time. Especially if your concrete is maintained by protecting it against chemical attack with sealer.

In traditional concrete, the final finish is accomplished by applying a broom stroke to it. With exposed concrete, they wash the surface cement off to expose the rock. With all concrete, as it wears, the surface will sand out over time due to acid rain effects and look like exposed. Then it may release small rocks. This is normal and to be expected. When exposed concrete releases a rock, you see more of the same surface below. When pea fill exposed finish is used, it is really hard to see these released rocks, making it more uniform and less noticeable. Typically, this process is more expensive than traditional broomed concrete.

Positive Workplace Program

We want to have fun at work and enjoy the people we work with. Creating a positive workplace starts with the managers and transitions to the crew leaders all the way to our laborers. We had some fun over the last week deciding on crew names. We then posted those names to Facebook and challenged them to work together to get their friends to like their crew name. The crew with the most “Facebook likes” won a free lunch delivered to them and bragging rights for this challenge. Congratulations to TJ and the Millennials for working together to win this team event.

Concrete Design and Pattern Choices

When picking patterns and colors, be careful to avoid conflicting patterns and colors. Since the process is different than natural stone or brick, you can not make it match exactly. Pick patterns and colors that contrast or become an accent to your existing stone or brick.  Also, find colors that accent it or in the same family and tone.

A better choices is to find a contrasting pattern and final a color that compliments the color of the existing brick. Instead of a pattern showing mortar joints, pick a stamp finish in a different pattern.

Finished Step Edges of Decorative Concrete

The finish on the step edge for decorative concrete is dependent upon the type of decorative finish being installed. On stenciled concrete, it is made to look like stone placed on top of a concrete slab. We cantilever the edge and finish the top 1/2 to 1" of the stencil edge. On stamped concrete, the pattern is followed down the face of the concrete. On texture concrete, the edge is textured to match the top surface. All the finishes have to be completed after the concrete is cured and the board forms are removed. This process happens at least 1 days after the concrete is poured.
